Free brief generator · nothing stored

Write the brief before you write the piece.

A title in a spreadsheet tells a writer nothing. Type the topic, who it is for and what it has to do, and this builds the brief an editor would hand over: the questions to answer, the sources to find, the angle for your goal and the number to measure.

Want the whole brief? Leave your details and it opens.

Structure, the source list, the angle for your goal, what to measure and the ask at the end. It opens on this page straight away, and an editor sends a copy with a note on what to write first. No call, no pitch.

What to do once you have it

Three steps, in the order that saves the most rewriting.

Step 01
Answer the three questions before writing

What the reader gets wrong, what it costs them, and what they do differently afterwards. If you cannot answer the second with a number, the piece has no reason to exist.

Step 02
Check nothing you own already covers it

Publishing a fourth page on a question you half answer three times already makes all four weaker. Twenty minutes of searching your own site prevents it.

Free
Step 03
Put the review date in before you publish

Day one, week three, month two. A page with no review date decays quietly for two years and then gets blamed on the algorithm.
